LORCs can be aged homogeneous
LORCs are age-homogeneous retirement communities in which residents are usually of the same age. While they are heterogeneous in population, LORCs are also age-homogeneous. They have a wide population of older Americans. One important axis of retirement community classification is whether the community was planned or not. There are two types of retirement communities in America, planned and naturally occurring.
CCRCs are subsidized
CCRCs are subsidized retirement communities which are available to those who meet certain criteria. A CCRC is an ideal long-term residence. While it is possible for residents to move between communities, most CCRCs use the same process. The residents must provide a detailed health history as well as the medical history of their family. These records help CCRCs decide the level of care a person will need in the long-term.
NORCS cannot be planned or designed
While NORCS do not have the same long-term care facilities and programs, there are similarities among the two types. They are purpose-built to provide residents with a variety amenities and services. Residents have to sign a contract to receive the required services. These services are not available through a NORC. They must be integrated into existing structures. NORCs residents made their selections based not on the level of service offered. This means their preferences for services may be different to those of others.
Assisted living retirement communities provide a moderate level of care
Congregate housing and assisted living communities offer a moderate amount of care. Every resident lives in an apartment and suite with emergency signaling. Living rooms and dining areas are shared by residents. The communities do not provide much care for residents, but they can offer some amenities like meals that are prepared by a central cook and organized activities. Additional security services are available.
