Continuing education requirements

For a DSHS-certified caregiver, there are many CE requirements. In general, caregivers must complete 12 hours worth of continuing education before their birthday, or within 120 days following their birthday. This certification is only available to caregivers who have taken courses approved by the DSHS. This training will allow you to provide personal services to the elderly, and persons with disabilities at a state-licensed assisted living facility. They may also be able to work for a private home-care agency or provide independent care for a DSHS-certified customer.

Online CE courses for caregivers have been created by DSHS. They include DSHS-approved Continuing Education courses. These courses are available through CareLearn Washington, a professional online training provider. CareLearn Washington offers many CE courses. The requirements for CE courses will vary depending on the state regulations. While some courses can be more difficult to find than others, most providers offer approved online training programs.

Background check

Are you required to pass a background check in order to work for the Department of Social and Health Services If you are applying to work with vulnerable populations, the law requires employers to check the background of any prospective employee. If you have certain criminal convictions, a background check is not enough. A fingerprinting appointment is required. You can request a fingerprint appointment even if you don't already have one. This background check may take up to 30 working days so be prepared.

To obtain an accurate background check, all information must be provided to the Department of Human Services. The state has a system called Background Check Central Unit, which utilizes a centralized database to conduct name and date of birth checks and fingerprint checks. These checks are free of charge for providers and are done through a DSHS-contracted vendor, Idemia. If you decide to visit your local law enforcement agency for a fingerprint test, there may be additional costs.

Pay

You can use a DSHSA-approved care provider to help you find a paid caregiver. Medicaid recipients employ these caregivers. These caregivers receive state payments and supervision from DSHS. In March, the state transitioned these independent provider caregivers to a contracted employer. Consumer Direct Care Network was awarded a 9-year contract worth $572million to manage the payroll and employment functions. Continue reading to find out more about becoming an care provider.

Your case manager must be contacted first to determine if you are eligible for the program. They can help you find a caregiver who best suits your needs.
